General Grill Safety

Know How Your Grill Works

Please review your entire user manual before using your grill. Follow all safety instructions contained in your manual.

Gas Connections

Natural gas grills and grills plumbed to bulk liquid propane should have a safety shut-off valve near, but not too near the grill. Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of the shutoff valve. Close the valve before any extended periods away from home.

Liquid propane grills supplied by 20-pound or 30-pound cyliders should be shut down with the lid open. First, turn off the valve on the propane tank. When all burners have gone out, turn off the burner control valves on the grill. Additional LP cylinder safety information is contained in your grill owner's manual.

Lighting Your Grill

Follow safe lighting procedures. Refer to your grill owner's manual for the instructions that pertain to your specific grill model. The following instructions apply to all gas grills:

  • Always ensure all burner control valves are OFF before opening the gas supply to the grill.
  • Always light the grill with the hood open to minimize gas buildup. Open the hood, then open the main gas supply to the grill.
  • Next, light the gas burner(s) according to the lighting instructions. If the burner does not light within 5 seconds, turn off the burner(s). Wait five minutes for gas to dissipate, and then try again.

Hybrid Fire Grilling

Always use caution when opening Hybrid Fire Grilling System drawers that contain burning or hot wood or charcoal. Only open a hot drawer if necessary to add more fuel. Open slowly. After pulling the drawer out a couple of inches, shake the drawer up and down to shake hot ember loose while they are still inside the grill. Never pull a hot drawer all the way out of the grill.

Use caution when working with a hot grill. Gloves should be worn when using the side-mounted smoker box or adjusting the hood vent. All parts of the hood except the handle will get very hot.

Safety Buffer

Good outdoor kitchen designs will create a 20-inch buffer zone to eliminate accidental contact with the sides and back of the grill. Keep children, pets and guests away from a hot grill.
