A mountain home built for gathering.
Set at 9,000 feet in Avon, Colorado, this home looks out to Beaver Creek with Vail just beyond. It is a place of big seasons and fast-changing weather. Snow arrives in feet, not inches. Wind is part of the daily forecast. Summer stays cool and dry. Clear winter mornings often follow heavy storms.
After years of coming to Colorado, the owners made the move from a mountain condo to a full-time home with space to host. Their goal was simple: create an outdoor environment where cooking, swimming and gathering could happen at the same time, in the same place, without anyone retreating inside.
The outdoor kitchen was carefully positioned just steps from the pool and hearth room, oriented to manage prevailing western winds while preserving open views of the mountains. Early planning addressed elevation, gas adjustments and utility coordination, ensuring the kitchen would perform as reliably in winter storms as it would on summer evenings.
It is designed as a true working space, not an accessory. Guests gather at the counter and remain part of the conversation while meals take shape.
At the center is the Hybrid Fire Grill, selected for its flexibility and its ability to perform consistently at altitude. Nearby, the Artisan Fire Pizza Oven adds another dimension. It is used for pizza, but just as often for fish, vegetables and cast iron cooking when the family wants something shared and immediate. For longer cooks, the Gravity Fed Smoker has become a favorite, especially for brisket, pastrami and holiday turkey.
In a climate like this, the supporting elements matter just as much. Weather-tight cabinetry keeps tools and cookware outdoors through snow and storms. Integrated refrigeration allows the kitchen to function fully without constant trips inside. The result is a space that operates year round, even when winter weather moves in.
The payoff is in how the terrace is used. A Labor Day gathering brought forty neighbors together, many meeting for the first time over food. Thanksgiving has become an annual tradition, with multiple generations sharing the day while the cooking happens outdoors. Even in winter, heated patios keep the space active and connected.
This is an outdoor kitchen shaped by thoughtful planning and built for the way this family lives: open, social and centered around cooking.
